S M. DESCRIBES MAN AS HIT AND RUN MOTORIST

TO PAY FINES COSTS, TOTALLING £14/16/

“You have not told me the truth and you have committed deliberate perjury. You were a hit and run motorist, and one of the worst types of motorists, on the road. Had you injured anyone you would have gone to gaol," said Mr. A. B. Collins, S.M. in the Police Court today.

he fined William. Alexander Peter £12, with 8/- costs on a negligent driving charge, and £2, with 8/- costs, for failing to stop. "I believe you did not stop because you were afraid," said the magistrate.

William Alexander Peter, 'pleaded not guilty to driving in a negligent manner in Wills Street on February 29. He was also charged with failing to stop after an accident.

Constable Richards said that about 11 p.m. on February 29 a man named Charles Colley went to the Railway Town Police Station and reported an accident. On March 1 Peter reported the accident and was interviewed.

Peter admitted being concerned in an accident in Wills Street.

He said he was driving along when he swung his car to the right and struck another vehicle.

Peter stated he did not stop, but had looked around and could not see the other car.

Peter had admitted having a few drinks on the day of the accident. Lighting was bad at the scene of the accident. Wills Street was 66 feet wide and had a fairly good bitumen road.

Charles Albert Colley, caretaker of Conroy's piggery, said he, was driving his car along. Wills Street in a southerly direction. When he entered the street he saw another vehicle, approaching in the opposite direction. About 100 yards from the corner the other car suddenly swerved across the road and struck witness car.The mudguard and running board were buckled and broken. The axle was slightly bent.

Peter had paid £1/14/- towards the costs. The repairs had cost him £3.

DEFENDANT'S VERSION

William Alexander Peter, miner, of 109 Wills Lane; said that all cars turning into Wills Street went on to the crown on the wrong side of the road. Colley's car was there. He did not stop because Colley's car was out of sight.

Peter admitted having had a few drinks on February 29. The money had been paid to Colley to keep the matter out of court.

Peter was fined £12, with 8/- costs, on the charge of negligence, and £2, with 8/- costs, on the charge of failing to stop.
